Everglades City, Florida, the Gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands, is located in Collier County. Everglades City is a mile-long mangrove island town that is the western gateway to Everglades National Park. Anglers come from around the world to fish for tarpon, snook and redfish. Phase One of the new Paradise Coast Blueway, Collier County's Paddling Trail, begins in Everglades City, at the northwestern tip of Everglades National Park’s Wilderness Waterway trail.
Prior to 1923, Everglades City was simply called Everglade. In 1893, Bembery Storter chose the name Everglade for this farming settlement. George T. Storter was prominent in Everglades City growth, and he is considered the true founder of the town. The Rod and Gun Club at the Shorter home drew visitors and sportsmen to the area. In 1923, Barron Collier and his company purchased most of the land in the town. Collier was successful in transforming a pioneer farming community into a thriving 1920's town, and he fulfilled his promise to complete the Tamiami Trail that would open the area to tourism and development. The Museum of the Everglades provides a glimpse of life at this time.
Today, Everglades City has reverted from an industrial-based
town back into a more natural area that draws visitors and
sportsmen. Everglades City, Florida is located at one end of the
Wilderness Waterway, where you can rent canoes or kayaks.
Tourism, fishing and commercial crabbing once again dominate the
economy of Everglades City. Over 375,000 pounds of stone crab
claws are brought for processing in each year between October
and May, the stone crab harvesting season. This tiny town is
filled with numerous restaurants, all specializing in fresh
seafood and other local Everglades favorites, including fried
gator tail and frog legs.
Activities and destinations in the area include
airboat tours through the Everglades, pontoon boat rides,
the Everglades National Park Boat Tour, a tram ride through the
Everglades , a swamp buggy tour through a Cypress Forest, the
Alligator Farm Tour, and The Museum of the Everglades.
