Cape Coral, Florida is a major city in southwest Florida's Lee County. It is part of the Cape Coral / Fort Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area. This MSA has a total population of 623,725 as estimated in 2008. Current U.S. Census 2006 estimates show the population of Cape Coral to be 151,389, making Cape Coral the largest city in the MSA and the county. Cape Coral is north of Fort Myers across the Caloosahatchee River which also borders it to the east. At 115- square miles, Cape Coral is Florida's second largest city by land mass. Cape Coral, FL has more canals than any other city in the world, with 400 miles of them snaking through the boundaries of the city and over half of them dug during the first 10 years of development from 1958 to 1963.

Cape Coral caters to the tourist trade, but it also looks after its long term residents, and that helps keep the sense of community strong in what has been called a retirement town and a bedroom community for the more business and industrially active neighbor of Fort Myers. City services abound and are well organized and accessible. Public events are plentiful and local in nature. Recreational outlets like the Waggin Tail Dog Park and the Cape Coral Historical Museum give Cape Coral an almost small town feel in a city of over 150,000 residents. The “retirement community” moniker has faded a bit in the last two decades as many younger working class families have moved into the area and many new stores, restaurants and nightlife establishments have opened to serve them without the need to “cross the bridge.” However the larger-than-normal retirement population still shows prominently in the city demographics; this reflects positively on Cape Coral's ability to provide a well-rounded community.

People come to Cape Coral for its favorable climate, abundance of natural areas, wildlife-watching opportunities, and, of course, the region's legacy as a fishing hot spot. One attraction that tourists and locals flock to is the Sun Splash Family Water Park, a tropical water park with more than two dozen wet and dry attractions.

Cape Coral has a school system that is second to none. It includes a mix of charter schools such as North Nicholas High School. North Nicholas High School provides students with the power to work at their own pace on computer based courses in a safe and secure learning environment. The school is tuition-free and students are given bus passes for transportation. Employment assistance and career planning are available for every student. Lee County High Tech Center North is another innovative school dedicated to quality educational training in business software, computer technology, culinary arts, health care, autocad, and web design. These are but a few of the specially designated schools in Cape Coral that ensure that every child has the proper learning environment for success. There are three public high schools in Cape Coral operated by the Lee County School District: Cape Coral High School, built in the late 1970s; Mariner High School, which opened in 1987; and Ida S. Baker High School, founded in 2004. The newest high school, Island Coast High School, opened its doors for the 2008-2009 school year.

The Florida State Courts System is divided into 20 judicial circuits or areas of jurisdiction. Florida has two appellate courts.  Florida's Supreme Court, the state's highest court, hears civil and criminal appeals from the lower courts. The court also answers constitutional questions and rules on the validity of statutes and on the construction of the state or U.S. constitutions. The state's five District Courts of Appeal, headquartered in Tallahassee, Lakeland, Miami, West Palm Beach, and Daytona Beach, hear all matters not directly appealable to the Supreme Court, as well as final actions of state agencies.

Florida has a two-tier trial court system of Circuit and County courts. The state's Circuit Courts hear felonies, family law matters, civil cases involving amounts over $15,000, probate, guardianship and mental health issues, juvenile dependency and delinquency issues, and appeals from County Court. The state's County Courts hear misdemeanors, small claims of up to $5,000, and civil cases of up to and including $15,000 in controversy, as well as traffic cases. Examples of civil matters include hospital negligence, surgical malpractice, automobile accidents, truck accidents, work injury, dog bites, and professional liability lawsuits.
